The Difference Between Mentoring & Coaching
(PushFar/Sheridan Resolutions)
We know that in our business; as well as in life, we are mentors and coaches. Furthermore, many of us have been asked along our journey in life who our mentors and coaches were as well.
Mentoring: The Definition
A mentor is someone who shares their knowledge, skills and/or experience, to help another develop and grow.
Coaching: The Definition
A coach is someone who provides guidance to another on their goals and helps them reach their full potential.
Mentors:
- It is a lot more directive. It is about the mentor sharing their knowledge, experience, and skills with the mentee, and guiding them through direction.
- Is mainly development driven and the process looks to the mentee to decide what they wish to achieve; and which goals they have for their mentoring relationships.
- Have a keen interest in helping others. Motivating, encouraging, and inspiring energy throughout all mentoring meetings.
Coaching:
- Coaching is non-directive; which means that it is about posing the right questions, providing the space, trust and confidence for the individual being coached to consider how they can achieve more, reach their objectives, and find capabilities within themselves.
- Coaching is performance driven and encourages the individual or individuals being coached to perform.
- A coach must make it real-finding the right balance of interpersonal skills and the practical skills to convert discussions into actions.
We know that both skills can increase confidence in those we are mentoring and coaching. It can also help us grow into the leaders we want to be – engaged and setting an example that can not only change our lives, but those that are part of our journey.
Thanks for letting me share. I have also included a link celebrating 25 years of partnership with Children’s Hospital & Ronald McDonald House. It is truly about giving back.
