Mid way between Seattle and Tacoma is Des Moines, Washington – the waterland city. One of the few points along the Puget Sound shoreline that allows easy access to the water. Des Moines truly takes advantage of its waterfront location, offering a waterfront Farmer’s Market, fireworks over the water on the 4th of July, movie nights on the beach, boat festivals, parks, trails, and marinas.
Saltwater State Park is one of the most used state parks on the Sound, with a sandy swimming beach at one end and rocky tideflats at the other, plus a protected marine sanctuary and artificial reef which attracts scuba divers. The nearby Redondo neighborhood has a lovely board walk and a small beach as well.
There’s more to Des Moines than beaches. It is home to Highline Community College, the first community college in King County, which offers a variety of degrees and certificates. A partnership with Central Washington University offers several bachelor’s and master’s programs on Highline’s campus.
It’s proximity to the SeaTac airport makes Des Moines a popular location for frequent travelers, and with it’s central location thirty minutes from both Seattle and Tacoma, it’s easy to get anywhere you need to go.
