Welcome to Our Community
Bremerton is the largest city on the beautiful Kitsap peninsula, and just a ferry ride away from Seattle. The city is perhaps best known for the heavy military presence here, particularly the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. But it’s the friendly people and gorgeous surroundings that will make you want to call our city home.
Though this area’s naval history dates back to the 1840s, in the late 1800s, a U.S. Navy commission found the protected waters off what is now Bremerton to be the best site in the Pacific Northwest to build a shipyard. The city boomed during World War 2, with construction and repair of the ships needed to fight the battle in the Pacific. That history, dating back for more than a century and a half, is celebrated at the Puget Sound Navy Museum.
The people of the US Navy commission weren’t the only ones who knew a beautiful spot to settle when they saw it. Bremerton residents have spent decades enjoying miles of shoreline for fishing, boating, kayaking and wildlife watching. Our parks are second to none, many of them with water access or views. And we’re home to the Gold Mountain Golf Complex, which is a renowned municipal course.
We gather each Labor Day weekend for the Blackberry Festival. The festival was named for the wild blackberries that used to grow where downtown Bremerton meets the waters of Puget Sound—the area that is now home to Fountain Park, the boardwalk and marina, and the ferry terminal. Three days of fun include a run, bike race, local musicians and entertainers, and, of course, locals sharing their favorite blackberry jams, baked goods, ice cream, and ciders.
