During the 2010s, Seattle was the fastest-growing big city in the U.S., with the city posting strong growth rates year after year.
Since the pandemic, though, things have been more up and down. You can put last year in the “up” column.
Seattle’s population increased by around 16,800, or 2.2%, from July 1, 2023, to July 1, 2024, according to data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau. Among the 50 most-populous U.S. cities, Seattle tied with Washington, D.C., for the fourth-highest growth rate.
Seattle’s population hit a record 781,000, and it remained the 18th most-populous U.S. city.
This represents a significant increase in the city’s rate of growth from the year before. When I wrote about this data last May, I reported that Seattle only grew by around 5,900, or 0.8%, and ranked 13th for growth rate among the 50 largest cities.
But the Census Bureau has now revised those figures, and it turns out Seattle had more robust growth in the 2022-23 period than initially reported. The revised numbers show an increase of 12,700 for a growth rate of 1.7%, which ranked Seattle ninth among major cities. Read More
