On the heels of our DEI feature last month, March marks the celebration of two more significant observances – Women’s History Month and Disability Awareness Month. As we commemorate these occasions, it’s crucial to be continuously learning as a real estate professional to best support Fair Housing and also to recognize how fostering inclusivity is integral to DEI efforts at any workplace.
Throughout history, women have played pivotal roles in shaping societies, cultures, and industries. Women’s History Month celebrates these contributions while acknowledging the ongoing journey towards gender equality. In the workplace, it’s essential to recognize and address systemic barriers that hinder women’s advancement. By promoting inclusivity, equal opportunities, and gender-sensitive policies, organizations can harness the full spectrum of talent and creativity that women bring to the table. Fostering mentorship programs, leadership development initiatives, and inclusive decision-making processes can empower women to ascend to leadership positions and drive positive change.
Visible disabilities, such as mobility impairments or visual impairments, are readily apparent, whereas invisible disabilities, such as chronic illnesses or mental health conditions, may not be immediately evident. Both types of disabilities present unique obstacles and barriers that individuals navigate in their daily lives, including in the workplace. Every year Microsoft hosts an Ability Summit which has been so helpful to our team to learn about adaptive technologies and other insights so we can best serve our differently abled clients.
It’s also important to recognize that individuals may possess multiple intersecting identities. Intersectionality underscores the complexity of human experiences and emphasizes the need for inclusive approaches that address the unique challenges faced by individuals at the intersections of various identities. Embracing diversity extends beyond surface-level differences and leads to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and supported.
At John L. Scott we are proud to be continuously learning and working in a supportive environment.
